The practice of counting down the 24 days of Advent originated in Germany during the late 19th century and eventually resulted in the creation of the Advent Calendar as we know it today. The very first calendars consisted of pictures, the cut out windows evolved later. But it wasn’t until after the Second World War that the Advent Calendar really took off. History doesn’t record who first thought of creating chocolate Advent Calendars, but whoever it was, was surely a genius!
