So where did these finishing touches to your perfectly laid Christmas table come from?
Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith in 1846. Having seen sweets wrapped in twists of paper in Paris, he decided to do the same in England. He first started to add mottos to the sweets to increase sales, then eventually he added the cracker element. As others copied his invention, he decided to change the sweet inside for a small surprise gift and his son then added paper hats for the same reason.
