There’s a huge disparity between those who grow cocoa and those of us who enjoy the final product. Our unique programme of Engaged Ethics is a hands-on, sleeves-rolled-up approach to help improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers – both in Ghana and on the island of Saint Lucia.
In Saint Lucia, we are pursuing our passion for chocolate by becoming one of the world’s few origin chocolatiers – growing our own cocoa. But alongside the rejuvenation of this historic plantation, we’re also reaching out to the wider cocoa community in Saint Lucia. For 20 years cocoa farming on the island has been in deep decline, something we’ve started to change with our Engaged Ethics Cocoa Programme – offering high quality seedlings, technical help, advice and know-how, and, crucially, guaranteeing to buy farmers’ entire crops at prices above the world market.

Since 2002, we’ve been very active in Ghana, the world’s second largest cocoa grower. In and around the Osuben Basin region, we are providing direct funding and management skills to launch and maintain sustainable projects to improve the lives of cocoa farmers. Providing cocoa seedlings and expert farming advice to improve yields, sinking a borehole for much needed water and providing transport to reach even the most remote farms are just some examples.
